Propane Autogas Lakes ImageNext time you’re stuck in traffic, think about this: the same propane you use to fire up the grill at home is powering some of the cars and trucks in the lane next to you.

Here are some reasons propane-fueled vehicles are gaining popularity, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center.

  • It usually costs less than gasoline.
  • It has a higher octane rating than gasoline.
  • It has a lower BTU rating than gas, meaning lower fuel economy, but the price per gallon quickly offsets the difference.
  • It has lower maintenance costs for high-mileage vehicles.
  • It leads to improved engine life over gasoline.
  • It reduces cold start problems associated with gasoline.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should pull your gas-powered vehicle up to your local propane company next time you’re low on gas. Vehicles have to be converted to run on propane. But it could be something to look into next time you update your fleet or buy a new car.
