President Howard Sargeant founded Lakes Gas Co. in 1959. While working for a major oil company, he searched for an independent oil business, and ultimately ended up buying the Harguth Oil Company, a gasoline-propane retail operation in Forest Lake. Over the next few decades, Howard used his expertise in the area of acquisitions to grow and expand his business.

Today, Lakes Gas Co. is the 12th largest retail marketer of propane in the United States, with 46 outlets in five states. Last year, Lakes Gas Co. sold over 100 million gallons of propane to its customers.
